Lara and I, the only two grandchildren in the family, were born eighteen years apart. Lara grew used to waving goodbye as I drove back to college after my visits home. On her first day of preschool, Lara marched directly to the driver’s side of the car and said, “OK, Mommy, I’ll drive now.” When my aunt protested, Lara told her, “Jennifer drives to school. That’s what you have to do to get to school.” Trying not to laugh, my aunt began to explain the age difference. After a sentence or two, Lara stopped her. “Oh, I see, Mommy,” she said. “My car seat won’t fit behind the steering wheel.”
